Update the withholding on my paycheck

Q: If I decide to change my paycheck withholding, how do I do it?

A: You will need to submit an updated “Form W-4 Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate” to your organization’s Payroll Department. In addition, some States have a separate withholding forms that you will need to complete and submit along with Form W-4.

Q: Where can I find Form W-4 to update my withholding?

A: The PayCheckup App offers a feature to generate a Form W-4 PDF that you can email to yourself for printing and signature. You can also find the form on the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw4.pdf.

 

Q: Where can I find my State-specific withholding form?

A: Some State’s withholding rates utilize the Federal Form W-4. If your State uses its own withholding allowance form, check the State’s Department of Revenue (or Department of Taxation) website for the most current version of the form.

Q: What are pre-tax payroll deductions and after-tax payroll deductions?

A: Pre-Tax deductions are taken out of your wages before tax is calculated, which lowers your taxable wages. After-Tax deductions are taken out of your check after tax is calculated.

 

Q: How can I tell whether a deduction is ‘pre-tax’ or ‘after-tax’ on my pay stub?

A: Paystubs vary between companies, but there are some common ways they note pre- and after-tax deductions –

1.     Different sections on the paystub for “Pre Tax Deductions” and “After-Tax Deductions”

2.     Individual deduction lines are marked with variations of “BT” for Before Tax, or “P” for Pre-tax; “AT” for After-tax

3.     “Deductions from Gross Pay” for pre-tax deductions, and “Adjustments to Net Pay” for After-tax deductions

 

Q: I am covered by a pension other than Social Security at work. How do I enter that into PayCheckup?

A: You will have the option to select whether you are covered by a pension ‘other than social security’. From there, you can enter the pension deduction from your pay stub.
